This blog is a little longer, but it’s packed with what I wish more people knew before working with a homeopath. If you want clarity, realistic expectations, and to feel more confident in your healing journey, keep reading.
I’ve been noticing more and more people lately sharing disappointment after working with a homeopath, which makes me sad! Things like:
- “I didn’t notice any changes”
- “They never followed up with me”
- “Why were they asking such personal questions?”
- “I didn’t really know what I was supposed to do next”
And honestly, that’s enough to make anyone feel frustrated, especially when you’re paying out of pocket for your health. I’m sharing this because I want to clear things up and make the process feel less confusing. Not just in terms of what the remedy might do, but what to expect from the whole process. Because it is a process.
Your First Appointment
If you’ve never worked with a homeopath before, that first session might feel a bit different. It’s not just about listing symptoms. We ask lots of questions, and sometimes they go deep. We’ll talk about how events in your life affected you emotionally and physically. We’re trying to understand the whole picture.
Why? Because timelines really matter. That one life event that flipped everything upside down? That might actually be a clue to what’s going on now. In homeopathy, we call it “Never Been Well Since” and it’s often at the top of the list when looking for the right remedy if it is in fact present in your case. I give my clients an intake form before they see me because I find it’s often easier to bring up the curly or complex stuff on paper. Writing things down in advance can feel more comfortable, especially when it comes to sensitive topics like trauma or abuse. While the space is always open and safe to share during the session if you feel ready, having it noted beforehand means I can gently circle back if and when the time feels right. There’s a right time for everything, and it’s completely okay to park something until you feel more equipped to talk about it. Most homeopaths are intuitive and observant. We can usually tell if it’s not something you want to speak about, so we guide the conversation in another direction. It all happens in time.
After Your Appointment
Once your 1 to 2 hour consult is done, us homeopaths go into Sherlock Holmes mode. That’s where the analysis happens. We might build a detailed timeline, a mind map of your case or even highlight the most important things you said. I personally record consultation sessions because if I’m really listening to you, I don’t want to be worrying about taking perfect notes! Some homeopaths are great at doing both. I’m not. Recording lets me stay present and focus on your story. If I miss something, I can go back and catch it later. This is mentioned in my terms and conditions, for those wondering. Consider it my insurance so I can just relax into our conversation.
Let’s Talk About Pricing
Some cases are simple to work through. Others are more complex, especially when there are multiple conditions, long medical histories, and high use of pharmaceuticals. In those situations, analysis takes time! I’ve spent up to six hours working through a single case (I won’t be the only one that has done this). That’s one reason a homeopath’s fee might seem high. You’re not just paying for a consultation. You’re paying for the hours of deep thinking, research, and case-mapping that follow.
At some point I’ll be adjusting my prices to better reflect the time I put in behind the scenes. For now, I want to keep consultations as accessible as possible while still earning enough to support life’s realities like kids, dogs, and everything in between. We’re living in an important time where more and more people are starting to realize there are options outside of pharmaceuticals, with better ways to support deep healing instead of just palliating symptoms. I want to support that shift.
That said, studies and real-world experience show that when we pay for something ourselves, we actually value it more. It’s something psychologists call the endowment effect. When we invest in something, we tend to see it as more meaningful and worth protecting. We take more responsibility for the process. We show up differently. We lean in. Back in my audiology days, we worked with ACC, which is a bit like a workers comp system in New Zealand.
Back in the hey-days, they would fully fund high-tech hearing aids for clients, sometimes costing up to $10,000. Sounds great, right? But you know what? Half the time, those hearing aids were lost, not cared for, or thrown in a drawer. Compare that to clients who paid privately. They got involved in the decision-making, chose what suited them, and felt no pressure. And they were the ones who looked after their devices, wore them, and became happy users. It’s no different here. When you’re invested in the process, you show up in a different way. You engage. You reflect. You help drive your own healing. That’s often when we start to see real shifts. More on the important of self-health responsibility and the therapeutic relationship to come…
Getting Your Plan
I tell my clients to allow up to 7 days to receive their homeopathic plan. That might seem like a long time, but between individualized report writing, analyzing your case, working with other clients, family life, and needing time to let your case marinate in my mind, it’s the timeframe that really works best for the both of us. Once you get your plan, it won’t just have a remedy on it. I include other helpful suggestions too. That might be nutrition ideas, mental or emotional support tools, or other supports I think will help your overall picture. Whatever your homeopath sends you, take time to read it thoroughly. The remedy instructions should be laid out plainly. If they’re not, ask. And please don’t take more than what was instructed. More isn’t better in homeopathy (nor ozone therapy!)
In my plan, I tell you what to expect and what to do in different scenarios. I explain the direction of cure so you get a sense of the order healing might take and generally what you might expect. {to get free PDF download of a “So You Took the Remedy, Now What?”, click here. Often we see emotional or mental changes first. But nothing is textbook. It might take several appointments before you see a shift, depending on how complex your case is. If you’re giving your homeopath honest feedback and also doing your part to reduce stressors like eating better or prioritizing sleep (etc.), I expect you’ll notice some kind of change within at least three appointments. It might be a small change, a noticeable shift, or even something unexpected improving that wasn’t your top concern. What happens depends on your individual case and its complexities. But something should be happening.
Remember the practitioner is a facilitator, the remedy is a stimulus, and but healing really happens inside you! If ongoing stress, poor sleep, unresolved emotional strain, or diet are weighing heavily, these maintaining causes can block progress. Your body is always trying to find balance, but it needs the right conditions to do so. General rule of thumb: if you’re not seeing any change after three appointments, bring it up. Let your homeopath know what you’re feeling. Sometimes going back over the original notes and complaints together is the best way to reflect and notice what has or hasn’t shifted. This is why I’ve started asking clients to name their top three priorities and describe what improvement would actually look like for them. I’ve had this happen in my own healing journey too. I didn’t realize something had improved until I was reminded it used to bother me. It had resolved so quietly that I had completely forgotten it was ever an issue.
Follow-Up and Contact
Once you have your remedy and you’ve started taking it, most homeopaths will ask you to check in by email around the two-week mark if there haven’t been any concerns sooner. In my case, I ask clients to reach out. I don’t always have time to check in on everyone, but I will do so if it’s been three to four weeks since there has been contact. I offer up to three email check-ins with your initial consult over a 4 to 5 week period. Anything beyond that is an additional cost. (I talk about why further down…..) This why I strongly recommend booking a follow-up after a month if you’re still needing support. An email won’t cover what needs to be discussed properly. And remember, after your initial consult, you’re only paying for follow-ups unless it’s been six to twelve months since your last appointment. If that’s the case, I’d likely ask for a full consult, because a lot can change in that time. I think most homeopaths would approach it the same way.
Each homeopath is different. Some might offer messaging support, while others may have stricter boundaries. It’s a good idea to ask how they work before you book so you’re both on the same page. I actually think this is a great opportunity to “flirt” with a few homeopaths. What do I mean by that? Many offer a complimentary 15-minute discovery calls. In other words, a fancy name for a quick meet and greet. This is your chance to ask questions about how they work and what to expect when working with them. It also gives you the freedom to shape your own experience by choosing someone you feel aligned with, connected to, or even intuitively drawn toward. It’s important for homeopaths to set clear contact boundaries. Many of us run full practices while also raising families and managing life outside of clinic hours. Just like you wouldn’t expect your GP to be available at all times, the same applies here. While we’re not medical doctors, we are trained professionals offering thoughtful, natural health support. And of course, if something genuinely urgent comes up, we’ll use our judgment and respond as we’re able. But remember, in a true health emergency, you should go straight to your healthcare provider or A&E. If your homeopath is not available to help you in the moment with something that is not life-threatening, I highly recommend reaching out to a professional acute homeopathic service like Acute Care Homeopathy, which offers paid 24/7 support from anywhere in the world.
Healing takes commitment, trust, and a willingness to be part of the process. Your homeopath is there to support you, but the real work happens in your body, in your awareness, and in how you choose to show up for yourself. Every case is different and every person’s path is unique, but one thing stays the same. Healing is not something that is done to you. It is something you take part in. I’m committed to holding space for your healing. And like any care provider, I’ve learned that honoring my own limits helps me serve you better. If this way of working speaks to you, or you’re ready to feel seen and supported in a deeper way, I’m here. And if not me, then I hope you find the right fit, because you deserve care that respects your whole story.
