Pregnancy Nausea & Hyperemesis Gravidarum: A Holistic Support Guide

Understanding the Root Cause: A Liver-Based Perspective

In HG and chronic pregnancy nausea, many women have a compromised ability to move bile. This can lead to a toxic backup (cholestasis), creating a vicious cycle of nausea, food aversions, and low energy. When the liver is overwhelmed—especially from excess vitamin A, copper, sluggish bile flow, or existing gut issues—pregnancy can magnify the issue.

Avoid These During Nausea & HG:

  • Cod liver oil, beef liver supplements, multivitamins with retinol

  • Carotenoid, retinyl palmitate or copper rich foods in excess (mangos, carrots, kale, spinach, liver, shellfish, too much dark chocolate)

    • Pregnant women need to be especially cautious with cod liver oil (CLO), high-vitamin A foods, liver supplements, and copper-heavy foods or supplements. Excess vitamin A—particularly in the retinol form—can build up in the liver and bile, leading to toxicity that worsens nausea and contributes to cholestasis. Copper works closely with vitamin A in the liver, and too much can disrupt detox pathways and burden bile flow even more. While beef liver and CLO are often marketed as “nutrient-dense,” they are too much during pregnancy or anytime, especially in women already dealing with nausea or liver sluggishness.

What To Eat (and How) When You Can’t Eat

  • Small wins matter: Spoonful’s of Bircher muesli before rising, black bean brownies with protein and bile-binders, or sips of apple juice with activated charcoal can all be game changers.

  • Bind & support bile: Use foods like oats, peeled apples, beans, and psyllium husk.

  • Hydrate creatively: If plain water is tough, try bubbly mineral water or herbal teas.

  • Experiencing constipation from activated charcoal? Add more oats, oral magnesium glycinate or magnesium oil topically, and keep up gentle movement.

  1. Drink powdered charcoal in organic apple juice or water.

  2. Prepare a small shot glass of Bircher muesli for the bedside table to finish before you get out of bed.

  3. Only then, put your feet on the ground and begin the day.

*Repeat the charcoal trick before bed to help mop up toxic bile overnight and improve morning nausea.
